931 South Kansas Avenue
As part of the first "strip center" in Topeka's history, 931 South Kansas Avenue was constructed in 1888. The strip consisted of companion structures 927 and 929 South Kansas Avenue and was designed by the architectural firm of Hopkins and Holland.
The structure is composed of smooth brick, limestone parapet cap and window sills, wood double-hung windows, decorative steel lintels and a cast iron threshold to the second floor. The main and second floor levels host 15 foot ceilings, with the main floor ceiling covered entirely of decorative tin squares and borders. Two walk-in vaults exist from the days of State Savings and Loan (1927-1949).
931 South Kansas Avenue has served a variety of businesses, such as clothiers, fish and oyster bar, private investigator, printshop, cafes, gift shop, dental lab, tailors, attorney, various associations, labor provider, and since 1978, Stephen Smith Images.
